Habitat for Humanity of La Plata County is dedicated to building decent and affordable homes for families of modest means. For 30 years, Habitat La Plata has focused on providing solutions to the growing affordable housing crisis in the La Plata County area.
Habitat La Plata carries out its mission in a unique way, working with partner families to build the homes they would be eligible to purchase. Our model survives through the generous contributions of individuals, corporations, churches, and community and government partners. Donations made directly to Habitat La Plata are restricted specifically to build homes right here in La Plata County and have the ability to impact a local family for generations.
As a registered 501(C)(3) non-profit organization, contributions are tax deductible. For every gift made, a formal tax substantiation letter is sent, which can be used as a receipt for tax purposes. Financial support provides Habitat La Plata with resources to purchase building materials while providing the donor with an immediate charitable deduction for the amount of the gift.
30th Anniversary Celebration
We are celebrating our 30th Anniversary of serving La Plata County. Please consider making a gift to support local affordable homeownership.
In the past 30 years we have assisted more than 70 families become homeowners, and this year we will build our 56th and 57th new home.
Your financial contribution will support the realization of affordable homeownership by contributing to construction costs and bolstering our program, which enables qualifying families and individuals to obtain safe and permanent homes with affordable mortgages.
Our 30-year celebration goal is for 300 individuals to each donate $30, culminating in a total of $9,000 with a homerun hit to reach $10,000!

Roof Raisers (Recurring Donations)
Roof Raisers
Roof Raisers is our monthly giving program, a simple way to invest in creating sustainable change in La Plata County.
By supporting Habitat through consistent giving, the Roof Raisers help us plan for and meet unexpected challenges in the construction process.
Monthly giving allows donors to give a significant gift over a longer period and have even greater impact. It is an affordable way to make a bigger impact and keep neighborhoods thriving long-term.
Roof Raisers may also be eligible for the Enterprise Zone Tax Credit.
Gifts of real estate directly address our most significant and challenging need - land acquisition. Outright gifts of property, such as developed or undeveloped land, that is not mortgaged can provide a direct benefit by providing a location for a new home.
Retained gifts, such as a personal residence or farm, allows a donor to continue using the property for their lifetime while receiving a charitable deduction based on life expectancy and property value. Please speak to your accountant for personal and tax benefits.

Cars for Homes
Donated cars, trucks, boats, motorcycles, RVs and other vehicles are sold and the funds raised help build simple, decent homes in partnership with local families. Regardless on the condition of the vehicle, we would like to speak with you concerning your possible donation.
Working vehicles are sold by Habitat La Plata and all of the revenue generated is dedicated to building homes in La Plata County. The sale value is used to create appropriate tax documentation for the donation.
Non-functioning vehicles can be donated to Habitat for Humanity International’s Cars For Homes program. This program collects the vehicle at no cost to you and sends the revenue generated to Habitat La Plata, which is then dedicated to building homes in La Plata County.
Legacy Gifts
Legacy gifts help further Habitat La Plata’s work through thoughtful planned giving. While a Legacy contribution may help build one home, its impact continues to grow over time. Habitat La Plata’s revolving Fund for Humanity uses proceeds from mortgage payments as capital to build future homes. Legacy contributions provide the initial funding to create sustainable, affordable homeownership for years to come.
Please speak to your accountant and estate planner before making any decisions.
-
Bequest gifts included in a will or living trust are the most popular type of planned giving options because anything left to a charitable cause reduces the size of a donor’s taxable estate. A bequest of charitable gifts can be one tool reduce income, capital gains, and estate taxes. Donors can bequest a specific dollar amount, asset, or a percentage of their estate.
-
Retirement plan assets (IRAs, Pensions or Profit Sharing Plans) are often subject to the highest combined income and estate taxes. Gifts of retirement plan assets can help fulfill required minimum distributions without being taxed as income.
-
Beneficiary designations identify who will receive an asset upon the owner’s passing. Common examples include bank or stock accounts, retirement plans, and life insurance policies. Designating Habitat La Plata as a beneficiary may allow a donor to claim an income tax deduction or reduce estate taxes by allowing a donor to pass more tax favorable assets to heirs.
-
Gifts of appreciated securities, such as stock, bond or mutual fund shares, provide donors with an income tax deduction for the full value of the gift and can avoid the potential tax on the capital gains.
-
Gifts of life insurance provide a donor with the opportunity to name Habitat La Plata as a beneficiary or policy owner. If a charity is named as a beneficiary, the donor retains ownership of the policy and has access to its cash value, but also avoids future federal estate taxes upon their passing. When naming a charity as the policy owner a donor may be able to claim an income tax deduction.
-
Life income gifts include charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts and charitable lead trusts. All three of these gift options provide fixed income or annuity option payments for donors or beneficiaries while providing opportunities to avoid or minimize capital gains taxes when using appreciated stocks as funding sources. Legacy gifts are the gifts that keep on giving.
